Ohio families comparing online school options often want to see a day in the life of an online student before enrolling their middle schooler. At OHDELA, students follow a traditional academic calendar, learning from home Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with a blend of synchronous teacher-led instruction and independent study. This walkthrough shows how a typical day unfolds for a sixth, seventh, or eighth grader at OHDELA. The goal is to give families a realistic, hour-by-hour sense of what enrollment actually involves, rather than a general overview of the school's mission.

Morning Routine and Daily Planning

The school day begins at 8:00 a.m. with students logging into the learning platform to review their schedule of live classes and confirm assignments due that day.

Because the day follows a traditional Monday through Friday calendar, middle schoolers can settle into a routine similar to what they may be used to from a physical classroom. Families can review the full schedule on the parent and student resources page. Establishing this routine early in the day helps set a productive tone that carries through the rest of the schedule.

Attending Virtual Classes

Every course offers live instruction ranging from 30 to 45 minutes, giving middle schoolers regular touchpoints with certified teachers throughout the day.

Core Subjects

During live sessions, students participate in breakout group activities and respond to discussion questions posted by the teacher, keeping core subject instruction interactive rather than passive.

Electives and Enrichment

Beyond core academics, students engage with additional coursework built into the learning platform. Families can explore the full academic program on the academics page.

Independent Coursework and Assignments

Students spend significant time completing assignments, labs, journals, and projects through the learning platform, applying what they covered during live instruction.

Because assignments must be completed and submitted by specific deadlines to be graded, middle schoolers build a habit of tracking due dates throughout the week.

Because this portion of the day is self-directed, it also gives students a chance to revisit material at their own pace before moving on, reinforcing concepts introduced earlier in the day rather than rushing ahead.

Breaks and Physical Activity

Across a school day that runs from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., students benefit from stepping away from the screen between live sessions and independent work.

These breaks help middle schoolers stay energized through a full day that includes both live instruction and self-directed coursework.

Learning coaches at home can help reinforce this rhythm by encouraging students to step outside, hydrate, or move around before returning to the next portion of the day.

Communication With Teachers

Breakout activities during live sessions give students direct access to teacher feedback, while the learning platform allows for ongoing communication outside of scheduled classes.

This consistent access helps middle schoolers get support quickly rather than waiting until the next live session.

This kind of steady communication matters most in middle school, when students are building the independence they will rely on in high school while still benefiting from close teacher support.

Socialization and Extracurricular Opportunities

Breakout activities and discussion questions during live sessions give students regular chances to interact with classmates throughout the school day. Families interested in enrollment can visit the admissions page.

These moments of connection matter for middle schoolers, who are developing social skills alongside academic ones during this stage of their education.

Building Time Management Skills

Meeting specific assignment deadlines each week teaches middle schoolers how to plan their independent work time around live class sessions.

This structure, combined with a predictable 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. school day, helps students build strong organizational habits.

At the middle school level, learning coaches typically provide moderate support, averaging one to three hours per day to help create a daily plan and confirm that assignments are being completed.
