EIGHTH GRADE CURRICULUM

 

PLATO Learning
PLATO Learning educational software, and Holt, Rinehart and Winston  online curriculum in language arts, science and social studies, provide the basis for our online curriculum choice. Additionally, Glencoe Math textbooks and workbooks are provided to the student. Offline projects developed by DELA encourage students to synthesize concepts learned online. Lesson plans are provided to parents online to guide them through the curriculum. Workbooks in mathematics, language arts, science, and social studies are also provided to each student for supplemental needs, along with high-quality literature geared to the student's grade level.

Language Arts - Writing process; personal, descriptive, narrative, expository, and persuasive writing; grammar, usage, mechanics, vocabulary development; literature; reading comprehension

Mathematics - Place value; operations with whole numbers, decimals, and fractions; prime and composite numbers; factors; exponents, scientific notation; measurement systems; order of operations; solving equations; integers; graphing; angles; geographic solids; symmetry; volume and area; probability; Pythagorean theorem; algebraic properties; word problems

Social Studies - Survey of U.S. History from European exploration through the modern era; construction of U.S. history timeline; research paper about Industrial Revolution; writing historical fiction; current events

Science - Science safety and skills; motion; energy; machines; waves; energy; electricity; atoms; chemical reactions; mitosis; meiosis; genetic traits; simple organisms; disease; green plants; biomes; atmosphere; weathering; changing Earth; astronomy; technology
