SIXTH GRADE CURRICULUM

 

Our online and text based curriculum provides interactive lessons integrating mathematics, language arts, science, and social studies.  Live, online classes provide an opportunity for student to actively engage with their teachers and peers.  Lesson plans are provided to parents online to guide them through the curriculum. Supporting text in mathematics, language arts, science, and social studies are also provided to each student for supplemental needs, along with high-quality literature geared to the student's grade level.

Language Arts - Reading comprehension and strategies; genres of literature; vocabulary; writing process; grammar, mechanics, and usage; speaking and listening skills; spelling; technology in communication; thematic units in literature and poetry; handwriting

Mathematics - Number theory; understanding operations (+,-,×,÷) and how they relate; representing fractional and decimal numbers; patterns relations, and functions; representing ratios and percents; coordinate geometry; transformation and symmetry; time attributes and measurement, customary and metric systems; calculating perimeter, area and volume; displaying and interpreting data; basic probability concepts; using visualization, spatial reasoning, modeling, and logic to solve problems

Social Studies - Ancient Hebrew, Indian, and Chinese civilizations; civilizations of Islam; early African civilizations; U.S. history from the Westward movement to the U.S. as a world power; geography and map skills; political science

Science - Nature of scientific processes; nature of matter; properties of elements, compounds, and solutions; structure and function of plants; changes in forms of energy, force, and motion; electricity; magnetism; earth, moon, and sun; human body

Electives - Brain buzzers; thematic units

Technology - Weekly activities using Internet Resources
